August 19th, 1967 - The single "All You Need is Love" reached number 1 in the USA
August 22nd, 1967 - After a 72 day break from THE BEATLES recording sessions, The first two consecutive evenings at Chappell (Central London) began The Beatles recording sessions again. Work for both sessions began at 7pm, The Beatles recording of Paul's "Your Mother Should Know" (Later remade with overdubs at EMI on Sept. 29th) for the EP 'Magical Mystery Tour'. The first session was very long (based on the invoice) and the second session very short.
August 23rd, 1967 - The Beatles second and last session at Chappell (recording overdubs onto take nine of "Your Mother Should Know") a reduction made earlier this evening of the previous night's take eight. This was The Beatles' last recording session before the death of Brian Epstein. who passed away August 27th. Epstein did happen to attend this secondnight at Chappell.
August 24th, 1967 - The Beatles met Maharashi Mahesh Yogi while attending one of the guru's lectures at the Hilton Hotel in London.
August 25th, 1967 - The Beatles travelled to Bangor, North Wales to spend the weekend studying Transcendental Meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Proof that this visit was hurriedly arranged is evidenced from the cancellation charged for not showing up August 25th @ 7pm (De Lane Lea recording studio - London) EMI paid the L45 pound cancellation charge.
August 26th, 1967 - The Beatles hold a press conference with the Maharishi at University College in Bangor. They formally announced that they had become disciples of this Guru and that they abandoned all use of drugs.
August 27th, 1967 - Brian Epstein was found dead in bed at his home. Paul received the news by telephone while The Beatles were with the Maharishi. Afterwards, The Beatles became members of the Maharishi's Spiritual Regeneration Movement, which required them to donate a week's earnings per month to the organization.
August 29th, 1967 - Brian Epstein's funeral was held in Liverpool. Only family members were present; The Beatles did not attend. Brian's death was ruled accidental suicide from the gradual accumulation of the barbiturate Carbrital over two to three days.
Sept. 1st, 1967 - The Beatles met up at Paul's house on Friday (four days after Brian's death) and decided to move forward with their plans for "The Magical Mystery Tour" project. This decision delayed their planned trip to India.
Sept. 5th, 1967 - Completion of previous recording sessions began for the "MMT" with two songs - "The Magical Mystery Tour" and "Your Mother Should Know". Recording of another song (John's) "I Am The Walrus" began at 7pm and ended the next morning at 1am. This involved 16 takes of the rhythm track and then overseeing a rough MONO mix for LP acetate. The many other sound effects which were to make this one of The Beatles most remarkable recordings were added in later dubs.
Sept. 6th, 1967 - A reduction mixdown of "I Am The Walrus" (take 16 into 17) was the first task of this 7pm to 3am session. Paul then overdubbed bass, Ringo drums, and John lead vocal before the recording was mixed into MONO. Paul taped a one man DEMO version ( sitting alone at the piano ) of "The Fool On The Hill". Also this night, The Beatles recorded the first rhythm track of George's "Blue Jay Way".
Sept. 6th, 1967 - A 7pm to 3am recording session dedicated entirely to "Blue Jay Way". This involved overdubbing of vocals onto 'take2' (a reduction of take 1). Then there was a reduction of 'take 2' into 'take 3' with more vocals added.
Sept. 8th, 1967 - "Flying" (Aerial Tour Instrumental) was the first song to be composed jointly by all four members of The Beatles. But the version on record was quite different from the these early takes. The six recordings during early part of the 7pm to 2:45am session included a jazzy saxophone at the end. 'Take 6' saw the introduction of three separate organs (recorded and then played backwards) on separate tracks and this 'take 6' was reduced into 'takes 7 and 8' ('Take 8 was marked the best). Then John added a mellotron track and then the evening concluded with all four Beatles overdubbing a scat chant. Four rough MONO mixes were the result of this recording session.
